For this project, I was interested in exploring the political and spiritual differences between consecrated and unconsecrated ground. In particular, I was interested in why consecrated ground is so important for a variety of religious traditions—particularly in practices in which the soul is believed to no longer be tethered to a physical place or body. I was also interested in exploring the abundance of monuments to death scattered throughout the Sonoran Desert.
